August 2017 - Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club Open Tournament

Week 4 of the summer tournaments saw the Appeti Team travelling down to the south coast and the sunny seaside town of Eastbourne in Sussex.

The Devonshire Park Club, who host the Aegon International Tournament in the run up to Wimbledon, has some of the world’s best grass courts and the team put them to the test!

Starting in the under 12’s boys, Ulrich was able to make the semi-finals after meeting Kai in the quarters, but couldn’t quite make it through the semi’s.

Kai fought to the quarters after a great display against the number 7 seed beating him convincingly 6-1 6-2.

In the 14U Boys, both Toby and Ciaran made their seeding predictions of the quarter finals. Ciaran had the tough task of facing team mate little Seb in the round of 16, where Seb put in a solid performance. In the quarters Ciaran succumbed to the 2nd seed and eventual winner of the tournament, while Toby lost out to the 4th seed.

Marta battled her way through to the semi finals of the 14U Girls with strong performances. She got off to a slow start in the semi and couldn’t quite make it to the final.

In the 16U Boys, Ollie made it to the semi finals, after 2 comfortable matches only dropping a total of 7 games on his way. He came up against a very strong opponent who went on to win the tournament.

Ollie also made the semis in the 18U Boys Draw after beating the 3rd seed 6-4 6-0 in the quarters with a fantastic performance. In the semis he couldn’t quite manage the win, losing out 10-7 in the 3rd set on a day which saw team Appeti lose out on 5 third set tiebreaks!

Big Seb was able to make the quarter finals after taking out the number 8 seed in the round of 16. Unfortunately he was 1 of the 5 third set losses, as he was pipped by the number 2 seed 10-6 in the 3rd set after a solid performance.

In the same day Big Seb and Tim also had the heartbreak of a close 3rd set loss in the men’s doubles, this time against the 3rd seeds and eventual finalists, another 10-6 tiebreak.

Ulrich made the Boys 12U Doubles final with his partner, losing out an agonisingly close final, 13-11 in the 3rd set.

16U Doubles saw success in both the Girls and Boys draw! Ollie and his partner managed to win the tournament without dropping a set and winning the final on the centre court of Devonshire Park where Novak won the International tournament just a few weeks back!

Finally, Amelia won the Girls Draw with her partner, Ella, after they won both matches in the round robin format. They didn't drop a set against 2 very strong pairings! The final was a convincing performance.

It was also great to have Evie and Kate Robertson, former Appeti players, down for the week! They really enjoyed watching everyone play. One of Evie's last tournaments was at Eastbourne and she did get itchy feet. Perhaps we can persuade her to enter next year!!!

Another week completed for Team Appeti and no surprise, another week of fantastic attitude and support from all our guys and their families. In particular Fillie and Marty who also spent the week cheering on Team Appeti!
